A concept album that's not about vampires, wanderers or warriors, Insider instead finds the Italian progressive-metal band Kingcrow aspiring to mid-period Queensr˙che without the hooks, mid-period Savatage without the keyboards and mid-period Rush without the bite. Over the course of 11 songs and bits of annoying spoken word, Insider tells the tale of two longtime friends whose bond is severed because of their connection with a secret government project called "Insider," which involves genetic alterations and cloning. (Gee, how original.) Insider would be more convincing if the dialogue wasn't so annoying and contrived: Characters with names like Jason and Alan are voiced by thick-accented Italians named Luigi Piccinni and Andrea Recchioni, for goodness sake. If you can get past some of the absurdities, though, you'll find a solid prog-metal album with a few standout tracks ("Never Say Die," "Save Me"), but certainly not a great prog-metal album.
