Necronomicon: Invictus

After 28 years devoted to thrash, Necronomicon deliver their seventh album, Invictus. Devoting such a slice of their life to one genre, you'd think that these guys would know every trick in the big book of thrash and how to bash out a well-written tune or two wouldn't you? That they do, but here they spend a considerable amount of time in the lands of power and traditional metal with some tracks having more than a passing resemblance to Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Not bad bands to emulate of course, but these guys have been around almost as long and so have no need for such blatant references. But the album is as dynamic as they come with plenty of variation in the tracks and a few killer tracks such as the super-aggressive 'Pandora's Box' and 'Thoughts Running Free'. Stalwarts of the scene, their sound is of a finely-tuned metal machine, but it seems they are afraid to open it up and see what damage it can really do. Were Necronomicon to let rip, they could leave many of the modern thrash bands in the dust but with Evile, Warbringer and Onslaught doing the rounds – the latter having been in existence for just as long (albeit with a thirteen year hiatus from 1991 to 2004) – this is up against some pretty stiff competition and ultimately sits in their shadow. The re-recording of 'Possessed By Evil' from their 1996 debut shows what that this band can do. More of that please.
