Sectu: Gerra

With album number two, Gerra, Swedish three-piece Sectu return with another slab of deep, dark, and murky tech death metal. The riffs are massive, even catchy, and create wave on wave of intense atmospheres. The production work is excellent and each instrument has its place in the weighty mix and the tech/prog element of the band's sound is enhanced so that the textures of the album can be appreciated. Technically adept, the musicians utilise their instruments – and the vocals – for a sound that is much more organic than tech metal usually allows. The tracks are solid, well structured, and have much in the way of variation in their approach. But there's something missing that stops Gerra from being a truly unique or innovative piece of work. The musicianship is phenomenal, the lead work is astounding, the performances are all flawless, but after a few songs, it can be predictable in places and repetitive. A good but not great tech death album, Gerra delivers much in the way of their 2010 debut and hardly anything extraordinary or new.
