Formed back in 2008, Trial By Fire is the debut album from this power metal quintet that have their base in Birmingham, England. Taking their starting point from the ever increasing number of contemporary European power-prog artists, Dakesis offer an added dimension to their sound by way of showcasing both male and female vocalists coutesy of Wayne and Gemma. There is some impressive songwriting to be found running all the way through Trial By Fire, aided by some crisp and clear production that plays to the strengths of the bands keyboard drenched melodies. With hooks that are memorable and insistently catchy across titles such as "On Wings of Steel" and "Valhalla" the overall impression is epic, grandiose and purposeful.
Taking the inspiration for their moniker from the Ancient Greeks, Dakesis convey the myth and legend / sword and sorcery elements to their sound with the marching off to war instrumental "Shield of Achilles 1" setting the scene. Much of what follows is packed with galloping riffs, glorious solos and soaring vocals with Gemma in particular shining throughout. The aching power ballad "Broken" offers a nice deviation in tempo and comes with a huge guitar solo that really hits the spot.
Dakesis clearly had a great time making Trial By Fire and hopefully this is just the start of even better things to come as they are building a strong reputation as a scorching live act. Highly recommended for fans of power metal bands old and new.
