Syderal Overdrive: The Trick of Life

7 piece Italian Prog Rock band, Syderal Overdrive, have released a concept album entitled,The Trick of Life. The band describes thealbum as a real "drama", presented in a prologue and four acts, that tells the story of a man and his fall and journey into the deepest darkness of life. Dark subject matter for sure, but will it hold your attention?

The Trick of Life is broken into 5 songs that are piano and keyboard heavy with emphasis on tension and the dramatic. The music, while mostly somber and lackluster, does begin to pick up in themiddle of "Act III", the "Endless Nightmare". Up until this point the listener might be a tad confused with what is going on musically, never mind what the story is about. Musical expressions are OK, but are overall confusing. What are they talking about and am I interested enough to care? Imagine a very flighty and even more spatial Nightwish, with less focus.

Nothing really jumps out at you to make you an interested party on this concept record. The musicianship is fine, especially the keyboard segments, butI found myself wondering what was going on in their concept storytelling. Did I miss something? What are they talking about? There are a bunch of twists and turns for the Prog Rock fan, but will probably go over ¾ of the listeners heads out there. If you are interested in Prog Metal meets Symphonic Rock, give this a spin, but be ready for a confusing ride. And not a very interesting ride, either.
