Evemaster: III

Well then...this is quite the non-event here. With what is very explicitly a gothic/blackened metal album, there is very little here, or rather nothing, that seasoned listeners will find worthwhile. Aside from a theremin in "Fevered Dreams" and a flute in "Absolution," every other sound is standard, the chord progressions quite familiar to the genre, but that's not to say this is even bad. For someone new but into this genre, it's probably great and hits all the right points. However, the clear ingredient missing for the more adept is soul. It doesn't matter if it's a synth key part, a guitar solo, or what could have been a powerful riff, they all lack that inherent passion that drives the notes home or that could have inspired a bit more surprise. "Sweet Poison" exemplifies this pretty well, it having the best sequences of the record, but too distant to engage the listener into their world. If lifeless was their goal, they didn't succeed at that either because when you hear something like that, like Brave Murder Day, the repetition and drone has a means of reaching the listener. I'm not entirely sure what it is, but my guess would be that Evemaster want too much to sound like their influences than speak for themselves. Though, if you like Rapture or that type of stuff, this is right up your alley.
