Speedwolf: Ride with Death

If you are looking for some new music that combines the spirit of NWOBHM with plenty of Motorhead and English Dogs mixed in, look no further than Speedwolf's debut. I was hooked by their album cover alone--just look at that group of laid back wolves riding across a lonely wasteland, a grim reaper rising up behind them, goading them on. This is the kind of image that has a firm grasp of the cool, exciting heavy metal that perfectly suits an afternoon's ride. Fortunately, the music itself delivers nicely on the promise of high-energy biker rock. Every track on this CD has the anthemic charm that only a blend of heavy metal and punk can offer. As I listened to Ride With Death I found each track to be just as exciting as the one before. How do they do it? By keeping the formula simple--hard-driving guitars, pounding drums, aggressive bass, and rough vocals. My favorite tracks were Speedwolf," "I Am the Demon," "Death Ripper," and "Denver 666." There isn't much musical variety here, but I don't think there really needs to be with these guys. I would have enjoyed more guitar solos, but the grooves, the riffs, and the vocals kept my interest. These guys are simply offering up a dozen songs designed purposefully to rouse listeners to pump their fists and bang their heads. It works.
