Melvins, The: Freak Puke

I can already hear many of you asking the same question as I did when I was first given this album by the Melvins: ``What the hell is Melvin`s Lite?` The answer to that is simple. It`s the Melvins with a slightly different line-up. This version consists of King Buzzo on vocals and guitars, Dale Crover on drums and Trevor Dunn on bass. See simple!

Now, I`m not a big fan of the Melvins. I`ve only heard a couple of their albums and always found them to be a bit ahem, eccentric. Although I found the odd song good, I never really understood why some people freak out about the band. Sure, they`ve occasionally got a cool Sabbath riff here or two, but in general I`ve always found the band to be a bit meh. Freak Pukeis the same way for me: OK, but not great.

The first half of the album, quite frankly, bored the shit out of me. It wasn`t until the song "A Growing Disgust" came on that the album really came out of its doledrums. The song is the highlight of the album with a nice slow groove. The rest of the album was also pretty decent as well with the exception of the song "Holy Barbarian" which was just horrible in my opinion.

So, Freak Puke hasn`t really changed my opinion of the Melvins at all. They`re eccentric with some good songs, but also a lot of dull ones.
