Recently I reviewed the new Oxygen album and declared it to be fluffy melodic rock. Here Oliver Hartmann (best known for his work with Avantasia, and At Vance) is in similar generic territory but in a much more rocking form. With Sascha Paeth sprinkling his magic mixing fairy dust all over the place and a set of rugged yet melodic tunes Balance is a highly enjoyable slice of contemporary melodic rock.
I defy anyone to listen to "Like a River" and not to love it and sing it over and over. The ballad "After the Love Has Gone" is excellent and could well make women of a certain age swoon given the (unlikely) chance of airplay. "You are the One" is jaunty pop rock so in many ways all bases are covered and for me the only minus is the cover of Tears for Fears "Shout" and even then that's only because I utterly loathe the toothsome pop pickers. I have just unticked that one and I imagine I may well give this a couple of spins long after it has left my review queue. I would be interested to know if anybody else thinks that the opening of "Fool for You" reminds them of "Hot 'Lanta" by 38 Special.
