Ozric Tentacles: Spirals in Hyperspace

Magna Carta is the new home of Ozric Tentacles — at least for the U.K.-based space-rock band's 20th album, Spirals in Hyperspace. And with this record, the label has on its hands perhaps the first true headphones disc of 2004. It's always been easy to get lost in Ozric's psychedelic meanderings that combine world music and trance, but the shimmering synths and electronic effects that magically dance into every corner of the title track, the hypnotic undulations of "Slinky," the surreal syncopations and chanting on "Oakum," the groovy jazz-funk vibe of "Plasmoid" and the paranoia-laced "Psychic Chasm" make Spirals in Hyperspace more appealing than previous albums from Ozric Tentacles, and one with a higher overall "chill factor." Plus, the play-on-words title of "Toka Tola" is sheer demented genius.
