Veer Union, The: Divide the Blackened Sky
The Veer Union are a new band to me. The group was was formed in 2004 by vocalist Crispin Earl and guitarist Eric Schraeder. Divide the Blackened Sky is their second album and is a follow up to their debut Against the Grain. The band have shared stages with acts such as Hinder, Breaking Benjamin, Framing Hanley, 30 Seconds to Mars, Flyleaf, Staind, Seether and Theory of a Deadman. Most of the album was self-produced, written and recorded by the band. In addition, production on the first single "Bitter End" was handled by world renowned producer Brian Howes (Nickelback, Hinder, Skillet, Puddle of Mudd, Rev Theory) and was mixed by Jay Van Poederooyen. It is the Nickelback connection which is most intriguing as The Veer Union sound very much like Nickelback with marginally more balls.
That's not to say that Divide the Blackened Sky is an all-out thrashfest, oh no siree. We are very much in the more radio-friendly area of modern rock as evidenced by the title track and the aforementioned "Bitter End". To be honest, I can take or leave this type of music but it's pretty heavy if at times a little too polite but it's inoffensive which may ultimately be its downfall.
