Velvetcut: Electric Tree

Finnish northern gothic atmospheric band, Velvetcut, has chosen to go more electric on their third album, Electric Tree. Tomi, is the singer, front man, guitar player and founder of the band. Joining Tomi are members: Topi, on guitar; Sami, on bass; and Andy, on drums.

The dark and brooding melancholy of northern gothic atmospheres brings to mind sounds and visions of Trent Reznor, Brian Molko, Matthew Bellamy or Jared Leto. This is great brooding electronic metal full of angst and power chords mixed well with electronics and excellent drumming and bass.

Every track on the album is a winner, if you like this genre, and I do. "Climbing Up the Electric Tree", with cold, powerful and moody piano opening is a great way to kick off the experience. The background news with George W helps to add drama and effect to the lyrical content.

"Pulse of the Earth" took me right back to a number of O.S.I. albums of the past, but especially the last album "Blood". "Carousel" will grab your consciousness with excellent symphonic accompaniment surrounding O.S.I. sounding modulated vocals. The drumming is sonic.

"Heroic Symphony" brings out the Muse comparisons, but sounds original enough to prevent you from getting confused.

"Heavy to Climb (Parts 1&2) sounds full of Rush influence, with great bass, which only made them sound better.

"Farewell and Goodbye' and "N.O.G." both include some of the best electronic sound effects on the album.

I've added Velvetcut to my "watch list". I suggest you check out this album, especially if you like the genre and the other bands mentioned above, and add them to yours.
