Municipal Waste: The Fatal Feast

Just look at that cover--an unholy image drawn straight out of a science fiction horror movie gone horribly, horribly wrong. Notice, too, the way our attention is drawn to the eyes and the hand of the ghoul on the left-hand side. With his hand outstretched, he offers viewers a piece of human flesh--or is he simply showing us the result of his recent kill? In either event, this cover confronts listeners with a bold image that brings to mind the directness of Iron Maiden's Killers. These guys mean business and have delivered an album that soars with edgy, punky, and dangerous thrash metal.

I loved it. The Fatal Feast is easily one of my favorite albums of the year so far. From beginning to end, it offers listeners a near-perfect blend of thrash metal with hardcore punk attitude and arrangements. I was especially drawn to the powerful bass lines in some of the songs; sure, they're relatively simple parts, but they drive things forward in ways I haven't heard since some of my favorite hardcore punk albums of the 1980s. Check out the bass on "Authority Complex" for a good example. If you've never heard Municipal Waste before, think about the best songs by Suicidal Tendencies and mix them with early Anthrax and you'll begin to hear it. If you like hard-driving, punk-infused thrash, then The Fatal Feast is essential listening.
