Forever's Edge: Chaotic Silence

Chaotic Silence is the 2010 release from power/prog metal project Forever's Edge, formed by guitarist Salvatore Pisano and featuring Suspyre members Clay Barton on vocals, Andrew Distabile on bass, and Gregg Rossetti on saxophone, as well as drummer Sam "Samus" Paulicelli (Decrepit Birth, Eliminator, Reign of Vengeance, Abigail Williams, Abysmal Gates ) and keyboard player Stephen Kain. This CD is now being reissued by Nightmare Records, so if you failed to catch this NJ supergroup the first time around, now's your time to investigate it.

Though the Suspyre connection would lead one to think that Chaotic Silence leans havily in the favor of that bands style, that's not really the case here, though there are elements of that fantastic progressive metal act to be heard here, thanks in part to Barton's strong vocals. Pulsating, gothic tinged progressive metal tunes like "Demon's Creation" and "Divided in I" have that ever so slight Evergrey flavor, but fans of Nightwish will love the symphonic keyboard orchestrations that adorn each tune. Sharon MacPherson puts in a guest vocal duet with Barton on the latter, and it's a great one. Elsewhere, look for speedy power metal on "Everlost" and "In the Dark", a mix of prog & jazz on "Mourning Star - Forever And Never" (featuring great sax lines from Rossetti), thunderous Dream Theater/Symphony X inspired prog-metal on the raging "Damnation - We Rise", and catchy melodic metal on "Endlessly" and "The Epiphany Of Music". Plenty of sizzling keyboard and guitar solos to be heard throughout, as well as some tricky arrangements, so Chaotic Silence really will satisfy both the power metal and progressive metal fan.

There you have it, a very solid and enjoyable metal release from an act that I hope we hear more from in the future. Word has it that they've been working on their second album, and if so it should be a good one based on the supreme sounds on display here.
