Failure Epics is the musical project of Canadian singer/songwriter/musican Jon Epworth. An equal combination of prog rock & metal, it's pretty obvious that Epworth has studied at the altar of King Crimson, Yes, ISIS, and Meshuggah, as Failure Epics is filled with dark atmosphere, occasional proggy noodling, moments of skull crushing madness, and yes, more atmosphere. "We Are Men" is like a head-on-collision between Fripp-Wetton-Bruford era King Crimson and Mastodon, while Soothsayer is fine melodic prog rock. For piano lovers there's a lengthy solo piece here called "A Reflection", while the two-part "Riverbend" once again sees Epworth return to 70's prog with an avant-garde element, as meaty guitar & bass lines provide the muscle underneath whispy pedal steel flights ala Steve Howe and nimble drum work that would make any fan of Bill Bruford happy.
It's all fine and enjoyable, if slightly unpolished and 'home studio' sounding, but for lovers of aggressive prog rock Epworth's Failure Epics will certainly fit the bill.
