A bit of history first: Electrocution are, or rather, were an obscure Italian death metal band formed in 1990, released a demo each year until this, their debut, appeared in 1993. Two more EPs and a split followed and then sometime around 1997, they split. A shame really because Inside The Unreal is a pretty fucking good album. Thankfully, on its 20th Anniversary, it's being rereleased through Goregorecords, the death metal sub-label of Aural Music.
This is classic death-metal, buzz-saw, hack-'em-to-bits riffing sat atop bed-of-incredibly-long-and-particularly-pointy-nails drumming drenched in grit-for-mouthwash-gargling death grunts. Guadagloni's and Montaguti's technique is frightening, their dexterity leaving much devastation in their wake as complex and crushing riffs erupt one after another. There's the occasional clean passage that act as oases that alleviate, albeit temporarily, the menace. The tracks are well-structured, taking tormented twists and tortured turns in ever-darkening directions, the depth of aggression growing as the tracks become increasingly intense and ferocious. Along with top notch musicianship and execution, the production gives this bulky bastard plenty of weight. This is an album that could have easily emerged from the Florida scene – the influences of Morbid Angel et al being more than apparent – and 20 years later, it stands as strong as many an album of that era. This is a brutal beauty. Kudos to Aural Music / Goregorecords for delving into the catacombs and bringing this extreme metal treasure back to the surface.
