Aura Noir: Out to Die

Aura Noir, for over a decade, have been the torchbearers in the 90s-black-metal-party music deserved through a putrid reclaiming of raw, evil thrash; in other words, blackened retro-thrash with some d-beat for good measure with vocals à la crusty Overkill. "All for the glory of Satan" and whatnot. Though, whatever the reason, Out to Die mostly comes across lackadaisical, not completely ablaze. It's weird since "Abbadon's" technicality is a bit exciting, the mid-tempo punch of "The Grin from the Gallows" is a great throwback, but overall the mechanism that is composing feels on autopilot. Instrumentally, too many bits are so obvious to anyone who's used to the genre. "Priest's Hellish Fiend" is bound to move bodies in the pit, and even features heartening text such as "covered in their juices of molest," so the band is in the ballpark, but, despite thrash's stagnation, needs a bit more invigoration than the same old.

This new record is still ugly, evil, and raw, but newcomers may be better off with any of their previous records. This isn't bad in a general sense, even fun in a mindless way, but anything from their past easily overshadows this.
