Woods Of Ypres: Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light

David Gold's untimely passing has made the listening experience of Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light a weighted one. Every word, every melody, harmony, and every beat has burdened the album with such poignancy that to listen to it is nothing less than a truly moving experience. This is just incredibly sad to listen to. But not just because Gold's passing means that the world of music has lost a significant talent, but because the album is so enchanting, magical, and just so moving, heart-breaking even. With lyrics like 'The choice was mine, to long for a time, that will never come / Though we leave the world apart, I, still went peacefully, / Quietly, with you, still, firmly... in my heart', it does feel as if Woods 5 was written in the full knowledge that this would be the last word from Gold and so he distilled his very spirit into its making. There's very little that can be said about this album that won't have already been written in the other reviews in print and online that sing its praises, and I can only join them. Read that as a cop out if you wish, but having been in possession of this album for two months, it's been one of those rare albums that's had me return to it countless times to write the review and finding it near impossible to put that experience into words. This is as damn near to perfect as it gets.
