Acherontas: Vamachara

Formed back in 2007, brainchild of guitar player/vocalist Acherontaas, the band hailing from Greece is offering its latest and third full length in career.

I basically came to work on this album with not much expectation and what do you know, I actually enjoyed many of the noises recorded here! Acherontas is a black metal act that has its own little way to present this metal genre. Still relying on generic elements such as: raw production, rasps, fast furious paces and lots of distorted guitar work, those chaps don't extend the repetitiveness endlessly. They have created a nicely dark and twisted vibe while keeping melodic lines all along the road so to speak. Ambient keyboards here and there add a deep somber atmosphere in a few places. The rasps leave room for cleaner tones and some sort of twisted voices are appearing, just to add more drama and a theatrical sense to their work. Vamachara is by no means a masterpiece, but those moments are worth listening. I've enjoyed hearing those good old crushing riffs, distorted arpeggios and melodic clean parts too. On track # 5, "Ohm Krim Kali", the band has created a more folksy/shamanic type of compositions with more traditional string instruments and percussions, making it my overall favorite tune. For more twisted and crushing numbers, you can check "Drakonian Womb (Double Mem and Single Aleph)" as well as the title track.

As I said, not outstanding a release, but has its nice twists and turns.
