Death Cult: Demo

This short release is the 2011 demo recording of Death Cult, a band out of Chicago that has a great sound and the potential to attract lots of fans. According to their website, they recently signed with Razorback Records and plan to release a debut CD sometime this summer. I hope things work out for them because I was impressed enough with the songs on this demo that I definitely want to hear more.

The best thing about both these tracks is the heavy and deep riffs we get to hear. I'm a sucker for the solid crunch of power chords played with just the slightest bit of palm muting. These guys bring that sound to the front of these two tracks and left me, at least, wanting more. The vocals are low and growly, but they sound clean enough so that the lyrics are fairly easy to follow. I don't like it when bands try to sing about interesting topics but perform them in the most incomprehensible ways. Unfortunately, Death Cult's lyrics aren't terribly engaging. I thought that both tracks were basically variations on the same theme: the outcast trying to find a place in an indifferent world. I'd like to know what other topics these guys will explore in their later work. I would have also liked to hear more solos from the guitars. The second track has a lead part in the second half, but the solo doesn't go anywhere and sounds almost cut off.

One note about the drumming: I thought that the drummer played well on both tracks, but the timing of the blastbeats seemed a little behind the guitars at times. I don't know if this was a problem with the recording process, but I think that the band ought to give the drum tracks another listen and make sure that things are synched up just right. This is good work and could only benefit from slight tweaking here and there.
