Vendetta: Feed the Extermination

German thrashers Vendetta return with their fourth release Feed the Extermination, their first CD since 2007's reunion effort Hate. When the band first hit the scene in the late 80's, you could clearly hear the influence of Metallica, Megadeth, and Destruction, and that's still mostly evident today. Feed the Extermination is solid, if unspectacular, thrash and traditional metal, featuring plenty of crunchy guitar riffs, wild drum work, and the gruff vocals that are the trademarks of the Bay Area scene.

There's a lot to like here, as many of these songs pack a good amount of punch, are speedy, and just hit all the right metal buttons to make it enjoyable for most genre fans. Frank Schölch is a capable guitarist, and the production of the CD puts his riffs at the forefront, but there's a real lack of guitar solos here, which is strange considering how most classic thrash old and new features plenty of acrobatic six string work. If it's riffs you want though, tunes like "Cancer", "Storage of Anger", "Tremendous Brutality" and the title track features a non stop assortment of them. Mario Vogel's vocals are decent and perfectly fit the music, and while he's not going to make you forget Mustaine, Hetfield, or Schmier, he fits the bill just fine.

Feed the Extermination is an enjoyable and solid modern thrash album. Sure, it's a bit derivative and not the least bit original, and the lack of guitar solos is a huge misfire, but overall Vendetta have put together a collection of thrash tunes that most genre fans should enjoy.
