Black Sheep Wall: No Matter Where It Ends

No Matter Where It Ends is the sophomore release from California sludge act Black Sheep Wall (yeah, I know, strange name), and first on the Season of Mist label. These guys deliver a pretty hefty wall of sound, complete with layers of fat doom riffs, booming bass, ponderous drums, and tortured vocal screams. It's not the most original style, nor the most engaging, in an era where sludge bands are seemingly popping out of the woodwork these days. However, let's give Black Sheep Wall credit where credit is due; many of the tracks here are powerful and potent enough, and if you like HEAVY, doomy material, there's lots to like here. Tracks such as "Liminality", "Agnostic Demon", and "Personal Prophet" certainly pack a thunderous punch, make no mistake about it, but the problem this band has it offering up any diversity for the listener. Too many of these songs sound identical, and the vocals are equally as one-dimensional to the point of being grating.

For sludge lovers, No Matter Where It Ends offers up some satisfying material, but by the time you get about three-quarters of the way through this CD, you'll find it wearing out its welcome and instead you'll be eagerly awaiting the 'end'.
