Cianide: Gods of Death

With Gods of Death, Cianide recorded 40 minutes worth of bare bones and straightforward death metal. It isn't without faults, and isn't anything too special that you wouldn't have heard already, but there are some enjoyable moments. Most of the time, Cianide lays down a galloping beat fraught with atonal shredding and airy growls. The songs that take a slower, more calculated approach are the ones where Cianide really shines.

Songs like "Dead and Rotting" and "One True Death" have slower-paced progressions that display Cianide's affinity towards sludge style jams. They do seem out of place considering the rest of the songs hover around a 4 minute length and are generally quicker and more energetic. In a sense, they're like a regular 4 minute Cianide song played half as quickly to reach an 8 minute length. These two songs have a much better feel than the rest as there is more attention put into the riffs, combined with the guttural yelling, to create a darker and more menacing sound.

There is noticeable mastering over-compression on the album that causes a small amount of pumping, and a lot of mud, but it's not bad enough to take away from the experience. Gods of Death is nothing new, and the production is passable but not particularly well done. Fans of bare bones death metal may find something to enjoy here.
