Beherit: At The Devil's Studio

Beherit presents At The Devil's Studio, a collection of songs they recorded in 1990 and apparently saved in cassette tape for 20 years so they could release it on CD in 2010. If the material had been chilling, or amazing in some way, this would have been a great decision and probably an enjoyable album. Each song begins with a few seconds of audible tape hum, features a lot of audio loss in the high frequencies and cymbals throughout, and a few clicks and total audio drop-outs here and there. For the band to save something like this after 20 years for their personal collection would have made a lot of sense. It's often good to reminisce about good old times and the history of your band. To release unpresentable material as a new album is not so wise.

The guitar is slightly panned right and is much louder than every other sound. The drums are completely dry and very quiet. Vocals often pop out at extreme panning left or right and sound like they were recorded with the microphone in the vocalist's mouth. The vocals don't follow the tempo of the music and instead seem to be growled at their own pace. Some of the riffs seem to have some type of pattern, but mostly it sounds like the guitarist sliding their hand around the top of the neck. There's somewhat of a thrashy grind element to the incoherent sound. Seems like they were trying to sound angry. The songs don't really take much direction and often awkwardly shift into an incoherent breakdown. There's a lot of audio flaws throughout from being recorded from tapes, but the songs are very short. This very aged representation of Beherit is good for reminiscing about your childhood when you were first learning to play instruments in the garage with a few friends.
