Nevereven: The Progress Of Disaster

Coming on like Lillian Axe with a modernish guitar sound, The Progress Of Disaster - the third EP release from NYC four-piece Nevereven - hits the middle ground between fist punching and shoe gazing, resulting in five tracks that ain't half bad, but aren't exactly brilliant either. There's nothing wrong with the spiralling riff and tasty little guitar solo in "Remainder", or the Age Of Electric meets Soundgarden of "Give", but walk away for a couple of minutes and you'll find that none of it has been held captive in your head, having been forgotten almost immediately. The band do pack in some pretty impressive harmony vocals, so much so that you'll swear it's the 70's all over again, and there's no doubting that Frank Pascali and Gary Pickard shred out some crunchy riffs, however the latter's vocals don't quite hit the heights, unless they are backed up with the ever so sweet harmonies and during "Winterkill" he just sounds a little bored, stopping the song in its tracks. "Orpheus" offers up a contemporary chugging riff and pause attack, that when married to the gang vox does make a more lasting effect, but it is EP opener "The World Of Tomorrow" that suggests that if Nevereven really could put their minds to it, they could well come up with something special. A cool guitar motif soars over a gurgling riff and throbbing bass to draws you in, before the uptempo time change spits you out again - very smart indeed.

Three solid tracks, one less than spectacular song and an absolute belter makes for a decent if unremarkable EP that is well worth a listen, but ultimately one that will get lost in the shuffle section...
