Last Hippie Standing: A Documentary by Marcus Robbin (DVD)

"Three characters are sufficient to trigger a cascade of associations: Goa. This term stands for a very particular style of music, for a very particular style of party, for a very particular style of clothing. All together, it stands for a lifestyle. Even for those who have never been to the palm-lined beaches of the Indian state Goa, where it all begun. Why? Well, obviously quite some things have evolved since first hippies and dropouts took resident at this place in the late sixties. Goa Is Not A Place Goa Is A State Of Mind which has just been re-released in a new edition on Merlin's Nose Records" (, 2012).

This is a 45 minute documentary, from German filmmaker Marcus Robbin, about the search for Goa, India, and its unique state of mind. Many of the best bands of the late 60s and early 70s, like the Beatles, Rolling Stones and others found both enlightenment and inspiration for their music and lives. The documentary follows the travels and discoveries of three characters who try to describe the experiences of the "hippie" lifestyle of the late 1960s and early 70s. Cleo Odzer, with a PhD in anthropology, Swami William, a resident of San Francisco, who was inspired to move to a mountain village in the Himalayas, and Goa Gil, Goa's top DJ, formally from the Haight-Ashbury area of San Francisco, help give life to this film by expanding on their life experiences and what Goa and its culture represent to them and the world.

The spiritual and mystical attraction of this area of the world drew fans from all the earth's continents in search of peace and freedom of expression of any kind. The film also documents how the diverse Western cultures learned from and interacted with this Eastern culture, with up to date perspectives on globalization and modern technology.
