X, Greg: Dream

"Enjoy My Dream"

Those are the words ending the hand written note that came with Greg X's new album Dream. The Polish born musician has resided in London for the past few years and has for the last sixteen years put his blood, sweat and tears into this album. One gets the sense that this album really has been a labour of love. As Greg says it is his "biggest dream come true".

Greg X is a talented musician adding rhythm and lead guitars, bass and keyboards. Joining him are Ken Tamplin (lead and backing vocals) and Jay Schellen (drums). The album was mixed and mastered by John Payne (Asia) with some help by Schellen.

Dream is a melodic rock album in the AOR style and has a very strong '80s influence. It's a very good album and one that I quite enjoyed. While this isn't overly complex music, Greg is a strong songwriter; all big choruses and melodic riffs and he lays down some pretty good guitar solos. Also strong are the vocals. Tamplin has an excellent mid-range voice ideally suited for melodic rock. Vocally, both "As The World Spins 'Round" and "Dream To Dream" are highlights, featuring huge choruses and an overall catchiness that is downright addictive. The songs do sound somewhat similar which gives the album a concise feel, however, if you are looking for variety you probably will not find it here.

However, if you dig '80s melodic rock in the vein of bands like Journey, you would do well to seek out Dream. These three musicians play very well together. I for one look forward to hearing what comes next.
