Coming across with about as much subtlety as a hammer upside the head, Russian based trio Evil Cosmonaut have officially launched their garage rock crusade with the release of their debut disc, titled appropriately enough, We Have Landed.
Call it stoner, blues boogie or any other clever name you wanna come up with, but the truth is this Moscow trio consisting of Alex 'Kaza' Kazachev (guitar, vocals), Denis 'Memphis Dead' Petrov (bass), and Konstantin Sosnin (drums), conjures up a veritable plethora of sonic sludge over the course of this forty minute head trip, that it should get people's attention pretty quick. Musically these guys aren't looking to reinvent the wheel, not even by this genre's standards, but they do pack enough unbridled energy into these performances and every single track is crammed to the hilt with raw, blazing riffs and driving rhythms. Judging by the childlike, plasticine modeled cover artwork, weird song titles and the simple lyrical approach, it's pretty clear these guys don't take themselves too seriously either.
If straight ahead, balls out, riff heavy rock (framed in a warm and inviting analog mix), is what you crave, then Evil Cosmonaut should be more than able to deliver the goods. Again no new inroads paved here, just a good old fashioned way to help you kill a few brain cells on a Friday night. Nothing wrong with that.
Tracks worthy of mention include : "Boris Yeltsin vs. Giant Ants" and "The Golden Apples Of The Sun".
