Cathedral: Anniversary

There will never be a band again like Cathedral, and sadly the live aspect of the band has come to a halt with a final performance held in London on the 3rd December 2011 (Read the review in our concert review section). This live album was recorded the previous year at London's Islington Academy and for the Cathedral fan an absolute must attend event. Compromising of two sets, one with the original line up and a second with the long standing established line up.

The first set sees Cathedral perform their 1991 album Forest Of Equilibrium in its entirety with the original line up, a slow plodding doom behemoth. This is Cathedral in their comfort zone, playing live in front of their leather/denim clad fans. With an excellent mix throughout, every riff and bass line feels clear and thunderous, with a very atmospheric feel however the second CD is probably of more interest. This comprises of a good strong mix of fan favorites, 'Cosmic Funeral', 'Carnival Bizarre', 'Vampire Sun' and their stalwart set closer 'Hopkins (Witchfinder General).

In a career spanning 21 years it comes as no surprise that Cathedral will certainly be missed on the live circuit. 2012 sees the release of a new studio album which may finally see them hang up their cloaks, however with a reunion from Black Sabbath 2012 will still see plenty of dark clouds descend on venues around the world.

My Score:

Saw Cathedral & Paradise Lost way back in 1990 in Australia, and to my surprise we get to see them once again on the 1st of March, on the same bill, can't wait too, just a short note, whatever happend to "Frank Marino's" in concert dvd, 13 months later and nothing,
will it ever see the light of day?
