Second album from Finnish / Swedish / English combo Hate Gallery is an angst driven forty odd minutes that rants and raves against humanity and the injustices of the World as we know it. The brainchild of former Warrior Soul Janne Jarvis, who has clearly been reading a lot of George Orwell, he describes Viva La Resistance as being "a soundtrack for the modern world we live in, as we stand by while our freedoms are slowly being corroded by dark forces" and to ensure the album has a concept feel the eleven tracks effectively segue into one. Jarvis handles vocals, bass, guitar and keyboards although the band is rounded out by the presence of two additional guitarists Richard Lundell and Petra Lepola and drums are provided by Chris Rose.
There is little in the way of subtlety as the main this is a frenzied, punked up workout with sledgehammer riffs from start to finish. "Rats", "Domination Soul" and "2 Minute Hate" are as fast and furious as the titles imply and the only moments where there is some slight restraint is with the more laid back and soothing "Love Shine On" that offers string arrangement and mandolins amidst all of the chaos that has gone before. Killing Joke, Nine Inch Nails and even Nirvana can be considered reference points across an album that delivers dark, foreboding and (unfortunately) at times quite repetitive musical ideas. It may not inspire a revolution but at the very least Jarvis has got all of his hang-ups off his chest and out into the open for the rest of us to endure. Proceed with caution.
