Ion Vein: IV v1.0

In the eight long years since Ion Vein last graced us with new music, the band have undergone numerous changes. Firstly and most importantly a new vocalist is in place for this three track, free to download EP, with one time Enertia and Attica USA frontman Scott Featherstone taking over from Russ Klimczak. Add to that a new drummer in Chuck White and bassist in Rob Such and apart from Chris Lotesto (the band's sole mainstay) this is basically a brand new band.

With such a lengthy time away from the scene and so much upheaval, Ion Vein wanted to reward their fans with this free EP and I have to say that long time followers - and anyone who has a hankering for smashing, tight riffs, will find much here to be impressed by. "Enough" kicks in with a grooving, but heavy guitar slap, before Featherstone growls into view with his constantly rasping, but ever melodious vocals, setting him out as perfect for the mighty guitar led music presented here. Tempo changes, tribal drums and throbbing bass provide at compelling bedrock from which the vocalist truly thrives, with his voice raising the standard of three already impressive and insistent songs. Adding a more blues based edge to the ferocious guitar attack "LoveHate" also completely convinces, before "Anger Inside" adds a little more traditional and Thrash Metal to the mix.

It may have been a lengthy journey, but Ion Vein have come through this rebirth a stronger, leaner and more aggressive beast and while they have always been a force to be reckoned with, the three track taster gives the hope that album number three could be very impressive indeed!
