NeWBReeD: NeWBReeD

Originating in 1999, the Polish Metaller's, NeWBReeD have released their 3rd full length CD simply entitled,NeWBReeD (Metal Mind Productions). With slick production, this quartet delivers 10 tracks of modern sounding Progressive Metal with hooks and an almost Science Fiction type of feel. NeWBReeD's self titled release is a pretty damn solid effort with a nice mix of heaviness, melody and nicely delivered vocals.

NeWBReeD are very heavy on the groove, which is really cool and also create a lot of ambient textures within each song. The drums drive this band and are a large focal point on their music and they provide a great foundationfor which the other members are able to build on top of. They sometimes remind me of some of the awesome Extreme Prog/Math Metal Swedish bands that have been pushing the Metal envelope for the past 15 years, but NeWBReeD never quite gets as technical as the Swedes do. These guys rely much more on melody and with the clean vocals that makes it much easier. Tracks like, "The Forever Spring" encompasses acoustic guitars, machine gun syncopated drums and electric guitars,as well as passionate vocal lines that take the song to its final place. While a song like, "After All This Time", bludgeons you from the word go and never lets up. NeWBReeD have an uncanny way of being able to blend the lines of the melodic and the heavy in a way that never loses sight of the overall balance of each individual song. Of course there are a couple of hiccups, the chorus vocal lines in "An Answer Without any Words" I find to be quite annoying, as with the overall riff of the song "Safety",which also feels like a cheese grater against my ears, but ya can't win 'em all.

Overall, the virtually unknown band NeWBReeD have a damn solid release here with their self titled CD. It's heavy with plenty of Euro Groove, a lot of melody and the CD Digipak is pretty cool, too! NeWBReeD's use of different sound effects and blend of acoustic guitar throughout this release, along with great sounding production makes this a good listen. Their grooves will take a hold of you and their heaviness will keep you interested. This is a nice surprise.
