Heirs: Hunter

Fourteen years after Slowdive's exit into the musical history books, Melbourne, Australia's instrumental quintet Heirs began picking up the pieces of a broken and battered sub-genre of alternative rock known as shoegaze, much to the excitement of the followers of a resonance that can only be described as a noisy yet atmospheric voyage. Sure, plenty of bands have offered their own interpretations of the distorted wall of sound that bands like My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain had seemingly perfected long ago, enough so that by now there should have been no way in which to progress this form of musical exploration. However, much of what was being passed off as shoegaze, specifically at the end of the 90's and into the 21st century, was, for the most part, uninspiring and altogether lacking the originality that defines a timeless piece of work.

Hunter, Heirs third release in the same number of years, displays the band's ability to create an ambience that elicits a sense of nostalgia, all the while continuing to concoct a recipe that is truly all their own. That is to say, Heirs is well on their way to becoming a paramount force in delivering music worthy of their namesake. Considering this is only a three-song EP, it's probably safe to say that you should expect to hear more material in the near future.... At least I hope we do.
