Soul Sacrifice: Carpe Mortem

After an intriguing atmospheric intro, Carpe Mortem quickly falls into cliché territory. Chugging riffs, metalcore vocals juxtaposed with death metal growls over arpeggiated guitar lines, and relentless and flat drumming abound. These guys can play, there's no doubt about that, but sticking to the tried-and-tested tropes characteristic of the likes of In Flames means that they aren't giving their musical and technical ability space to shine. Soul Sacrifice can do much better. The inclusion of synths/keyboards in 'Comatose' would be enough to induce a coma were they not so irritatingly upbeat and "kiddie metal". The breakdowns scattered throughout the album are annoying predictable. As for the songs, there's little original or innovative, maybe the occasional moment here and there that arouses some interest but you've heard this, a lot. Great musicians, great vocals, great production, if you like your Swedish metal, this is pretty good but is neither ground-breaking nor essential.
