Young, Pegi & the Survivors: Bracing for Impact

"Pegi Young began writing songs and playing guitar while still in high school, but eventually put her creative instincts on hold to attend to the demands of family life" "When I was younger, I was way, way too shy to do anything but very amateur performing," Young states. "But it eventually became a matter of having these opportunities and building some confidence and thinking, do I really want to be on my deathbed going 'Damn, I wish I'd made some records'? So I did it, and I loved it. And then I had more songs, so I did it again." (http://www.pegiyoung.com/bio.html, 2011).

Joining Young, who plays acoustic guitar, electric piano, and sings vocals are Kevin Holly, on guitar; Rick Roses, on bass; Spooner Oldham, on piano and keyboards; Phil Jones, on drums; Joe Sublett, on sax; Darrell Leonard, on trumpet, Jock Ellis, on trombone; and Larry Cragg, on baritone sax. Joining them from time to time on the album with backing vocals are the Watson Twins. Neil Young joins in on electric guitar on the final track, "Song for a Baby Girl".

This is good 1950's style country rock, similar to Elvis Presley's early work. It is straight up classic country rock delivered without compromise and full of emotion and personal feeling. You can tell Young has put her heart and soul into this work. She uses plenty of spirit and vocal fire power to get the message across over 11 tracks of good ole rock n' roll. "Flatline Mama", "No Heart Beat Sounds', "I Don't Want to Talk About It", "Number 9 Train", "Gonna Walk Away", "Song for a Baby Girl", and her cover of Neil Young's "Doghouse" were the highlights for me.
