Ghoul: Transmission Zero

With identity's veiled behind wittily gory pseudonyms, Ghoul have spilled their guts yet again in their own idiosyncratic tongue-through-cheek style with Transmission Zero, their first full length in five years. From the opening deluge of bile, vomit, and gore that is the instrumental 'The Lunatic Hour' through to the decadence of 'Metallicus Ex Mortis', the traits of thrash are slammed hard into the face. This is metal for men with the kind of sense of humour developed through many an evening spent watching gore and splatter movies and religiously studying Cannibal Corpse album covers into the small hours. Combining classic production values with a bunch of chainsaw thrash riffs, hammer-smashing drums, and bone-gnawing vocals, Transmission Zero is like an axe in the skull. Blood-soaked in the traits of thrash, and like body parts along the highway, there are plenty of quirks scattered through the album. 'Death in the Swamp', at ninety three seconds, has more than a few elements of horror punk. Cremator's bass gets the distorted wah treatment on a couple of tunes. And the death-like grunts from all four members are occasionally sliced apart with effects. As funny as they are evil, Ghoul can certainly chuck out a riff when they want. 'The Mark Of Voodoo' and 'Brain Jerk' are as different as they are heavy and bear some of the grisliest guitar riffs here. And check out 'Blood Feast' and 'Tooth and Claw' for gruntalong thrash choruses. Utterly grim and always entertaining, Transmission Zero is fatal.
