There seems to be an amusing battle to be the best power metal band on the North American continent at the moment. On the one hand we have Cage who have recently released the disappointing Supremacy of Steel and now we have Widow who are described by those nice people at Pure Steel Records as having," very outstanding vocals, which are sometimes a bit emotional too, fits perfect to the majestic twin-guitar-leads, so no follower of this genre will be disappointed! In short: WIDOW is North American Power Metal."
Well, the twin-guitar-leads are very good although Chris Bennett is the only guitarist named so replicating the work live may be difficult but whilst Life's blood is a fine little album I'd probably suggest that it owes more to the NWOBHM than anything else. There are hints of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and the punchy rhythm section moves proceedings along in a way designed to make the listener raise their fists and bang their heads as if it was 1983 all over again.
Life's Blood is so far away from what is currently considered "in" or mainstream that Widow deserve your support for plugging away and producing a fine, traditional heavy metal album. There's even a song called "Another Fallen Angel" – what's not to love?
