This is another of those Frontiers "projects," some of which sound like cohesive albums, some of which most emphatically do not. Kimball Jamison resoundingly does despite all the things about the project which erect huge warning signs around the whole enterprise. In some ways the main potential problem is also the thing which has probably enabled Bobby Kimball (Toto) and Jimi Jamison(Survivor) to deliver excellent vocal performances. Neither of our AOR powerhouse vocalists were involved at all in the writing process so all they had to do was sing. Providing the songs are up to scratch what could go wrong?
With production duties handled expertly by Mat Sinner (yes, that Mat Sinner) and songs by the god-like Jim Peterick, Richard Page, Robert Sall and Erik Martensson there was never any real chance that this album would disappoint and in a year full of brilliant AOR records Kimball-Jamison is right up with the best of them.
There are so many great hooks on this album it is almost untrue be it the closing ballad "Your Photograph" or the utterly joyful Peterick-penned "Chasing Euphoria" that it is almost impossible to choose a best track such is the quality. Vocally I'd suggest that Jamison comes out slightly better as occasionally Kimball sounds a little strained but then again he's well into his sixties so I think it's OK to forgive any imperfections.
As I've already said, 2011 has been a superb year for AOR and Kimball-Jamison challenges for the title of best of the year.
