Birthgiving Toad: For Awkward Company

Birthgiving Toad is Lasse Bækby Buch's creation from out of Denmark. This music is definitely out of the mainstream, but with the similarities in the music industry today, that can be a good thing. Other band members include Levi Vincent Hansen, Mathias Klarlund, Piotr Szwajgier, and Blazej Heldwein, though which instruments they play was not included on any of the band's websites.

This is music for those who do not prefer much structure in their sound. It is similar to Frank Zappa or American psychedelic music of the 60s. It is definitely a grower. You are most likely not going to either get it or like the music on first listen. But if you give it time you will find some good guitar, heavy bass, keyboard and drum work interweaving its way through this music.

The opener, "Waxtipede" gets things off to a good, quick start. The heavy bass here and throughout the album is particularly good. "Drop Inside" has an early Pink Floyd feeling to it without being a copy in any way. Their cover of Sly and the Stone's "You Caught Me Smilin'", is also a nice surprise. The closer "Eyes Fixed Ahead" is a nice exploratory, mostly instrumental, number that is full of fun sounds.

If you like change or different sounding psychedelic themes you will probably welcome this album among your collection.
