Impulse Ensemble: Initiation

Initiation is the first album from Impulse Ensemble, a jazz/world fusion trio consisting of Tony Vacca (balafon, drums, percussion), Derrik Jordan (electric 5 string violin, congas, vocals, percussion) and Jim Matus (laoutar).

Initiation is a merging of exotic Eastern rhythms and sounds with the world of jazz. The music does not vary that much from song to song but that is not a problem since it is well executed and quite interesting. The players are all at the top of their game on their respective instruments and as you might have guessed this is a percussion heavy album. At times I was reminded of Peter Gabriel's forays into world music.

The album begins with "Senegal-America" and its trippy space-like intro before the groove settles in with lots of percussion and a whole lot of Eastern flair. Jordan really rips it up on the violin while Matus adds some delightful acoustic sounds on the laoutar. Of course, the percussion work of Vacca is riveting, as it is throughout the CD.

On to the "Ragpicker's Rhapsody" where much of the focus is on laoutar and violin. The short bursts of violin rhythms coincide with a steady stream of percussion as the band picks up the intensity.

The album's catchiest tune and my personal favourite is "Catch That Wave" featuring melodic rhythms, sweet lauotar picking and the pleasing vocals of Jordan. His soulful and thoughtful voice matches up with the music rather well.

Impulse Ensemble are making innovative music and for that they should be commended. It may not be for everyone but if you are a fan of world music and jazz you would be wise to check out Initiation.
