Inner Bright, The: Caterwaul

The 3 piece Prog/Experimental Metal band, The Inner Bright, have a new self financed, 8 track CD aptly called Caterwaul. Citing main influences as Meshuggah, Periphery and The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Inner Bright fall far short of their mentors. Stuck in the 'complicated for complicated sake', this Metal trio is more experimental garage fodder than Metal heroes.

With two 8 string guitars and a drummer, The Inner Bright are not your typical trio. Part Hardcore, part Prog Metal and part Jazz Fusion, these guys are all over the map on Caterwaul. Technically proficient, but musically inept, Caterwaul is the perfect CD title for these guys. Their songs left me feeling thoroughly confused and they have no rhythm or purpose. Each song really does feel that they were created with complicated, off metered tempo changes just for the sake of being complicated. Sometimes heavy and sometimes quirky, The Inner Bright manage to fly the path of being unorthodox and almost whimsical at times while never making a connection. These guys do try to push the musical limits and that combined with vocal screaming that is almost indistinguishable leads to a record that just isn't fun to listen to.

The Inner Bright are steeped in the belief of playing each song with an uncompromising vision, but unfortunately their songs just aren't good enough to keep you interested. Songs are dark, intense but also just not fun to listen to. It just goes to show that playing polyrhythms with 8 string guitars just doesn't always sound good in the hands of everyone. The Inner Bright are trying to say something, but I just don't have any idea what it is that they are trying to say.
