Curtiss Maldoon: Sepheryn

If Curtiss Maldoon are remembered for anything, and that is a fairly hefty if, then it would be because Madonna took the song "Sepheryn", re-jigged it a great deal, turned it into "Ray of Life" and promptly had a massive worldwide hit bringing belated recognition to both the song and Curtiss Maldoon. le. Singer/ songwriters/guitarists Dave Curtiss and Clive Maldoon came to prominence in their native England and never really made it into mainstream consciousness and they had split up even before Maldoon died in 1978.

Clearly one of the selling points here is the appearance of Steve Howe but it is quite easy to see why they never made it. There's a rag bag of styles on show (folk, country, pop and rock) and none of them are overly convincing or memorable. "Man from Afghanistan" is the best of the bunch and is handily placed at the very beginning but to be succinct it's very much a record of the time it was made and it's difficult to see who the audience for it would be in 2011.

That said, if you are/were a fan there is the whole of the band's first album and some rarities which make it worth purchasing for the dedicated fan.
