Death Wolf is the side project of Marduk guitarist Morgan Håkansson, and their latest release for Regain Records is self-titled, containing a dozen tracks of what they are calling "horror death rock'. I'm not really sure what 'horror death rock' is, but for the most part it's pretty uninteresting, bland Danzig styled metal. You have to wonder if many of these musicians who are in fairly successful black metal acts are somewhat bored with what they are doing, as the last few years we've seen numerous side projects popping up with many of them, churning out music that has little to do with the raging black metal that their main bands deliver. Death Wolf are no exception. Morgan and his mates obviously have an affinity for old Black Sabbath and Danzig, but the problem here is that there are no memorable riffs, the vocals are weak, and the songs all sound the same. A few tracks, and especially "Morning Czar Shineth", have some HUGE bass riffs, which are quite cool to hear, but for the most part, nothing really stands out here as noteworthy or enjoyable. Considering Morgan's accomplishments in the great Marduk, Death Wolf can only be looked at as a major disappointment.
