Eat the Gun: Runner

German band Eat The Gun have been a regular on the gig circuit in Germany, playing over 500 shows since their formation in 2003. Runner is their third studio album, and sees the band mixing a modern rock style (Danko Jones appears to be a strong influence) with the more classic hard rock feel of AC/DC and Motorhead. I have to be honest and say that its not an entirely convincing marriage of styles, with the band apparently caught between two stools and unsure of the audience they're aiming at. With production and musicianship merely adequate, it's down to the songs to do the work, and whilst there is the odd decent one here (the anthemic "Not Dead Yet", the sleazy hard rock of"The Evil in you and me"), the majority are rather turgid listens. Ultimately one with the feeling that if this band were playing in a pub you happened to be in, you'd give them a watch for a song or two, but wouldn't go out of the way to pay for a show or buy their albums.
