Another emerging name that have been snapped up by the blossoming Rocksector label, Black Veins is album number two from Manchester based contemporary rockers Exit State. Bursting with the creative spark and energy that you would expect from an up and coming band they offer up stuttering riffs, thought provoking lyrics, memorable hooks and plenty of variations in tempo throughout. Opening with the two minute blast of "Enough Already" there is an immediacy that demands your attention. Vocalist / rhythm guitarist Roy Bright has a delivery that is full of passion and equally comfortable whether he is spitting out the lyrics to the venomous "Check out the Crazy" or heartfelt and sincere on the tender ballad "All For You".
A refreshing and unique combination of melodic metal and post-punk pop, the rhythmic attack of "Circles" and world weary "Ten Years After" are alt-rock anthems that leave a strong impression. Final track "This Life" builds from a muted dirge into a thumping, muscular chug that a band like Therapy? used to do so well and ensures a strong and memorable close. With bands like Exit State around there will always be something new and vibrant on the scene and will ensure a bright future for real bands playing real music. If you've ever been tempted to check out a band you've never heard of before on the strength of a review then give Black Veins a chance and prepare to be impressed.
