Canned Heat: Live at Montreux

This was a great surprise to receive as a review CD. I have been a fan of Canned Heat since way back in the 70s. This great live performance from 1973 captures these Woodstock legends in their glory for all of posterity.

Playing on this album are the band and some additional guest players: Bob "The Bear" Hite, on vocals, harmonica, and bass; Henry Vestine, on guitar; Fito De La Parra, on drums; Richard White, on bass and vocals; James Shane, on guitars and vocals; Ed Beyer, on piano and keyboards; Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, on guitar, harmonica, violin, and vocals. Guest appearances include Richard Hite, on bass and vocals.

'On the Road Again' is a great traveling road song and this live version helps capture and deliver all of its power. "Night Time is the Right Time" is a classic song delivered to the point you will want to hear it again and again. The audience interaction helps add to the warm feeling throughout most of the tracks. I wanted "Rock and Roll Music" to go on all night. "Lookin' for My Rainbow" captures a feeling and spirit that I remember well from the 70s. "Shake 'N' Boogie", is an instantaneous highlight, with over 14 minutes of epic blues guitar laid out slow and easy like it was always meant to be. Enjoy some awesome blues the way it used to be played, slow and mellow and full of feeling.
