Goregast: Desechos Humanos

Desechos Humanos is old school death metal in its purest form. Forget that it was released in 2011, this album's brutal mix of filthy death metal riffs with occasional grindcore blasts immediately takes you on a portal back in time to when pioneers like Morgoth and General Surgery dominated the extreme metal scene. Goregast obviously don't intend on shattering any boundaries with this album, but their convincing execution of old-school death metal should impress dedicated fans of the genre. Followers of this underground German act will want to check this out, but for the average listener, Desechos Humanos isn't a particularly remarkable or original album.

Goregast are often considered a death metal/grindcore act, and though I'm currently unfamiliar with their previous works, this is first and foremost a death metal album. The downtuned riffs immediately bring Swedish legends like Entombed to mind, and there are also hints of American death metal (Morbid Angel, Deicide, etc.) scattered throughout the album. There are a few Carcass-influenced blasting sections, but they don't play a major role in the music - Brutal Truth inspired deathgrind is found on quite a few tracks, though. Desechos Humanos obviously isn't the most groundbreaking release you'll hear this year, so the quality of the album ultimately rests in the hands of the production, musicianship, and songwriting. Right off the bat, I'll say that the raw production and impressive musicianship suit the music perfectly, and Goregast are clearly a group of skillful musicians. The songwriting isn't particularly memorable, but there are enough enjoyable riffs to definitely keep me entertained while the album is playing.

I can't say I was completely blown away by Desechos Humanos, but it's unquestionably a high-quality throwback death metal effort that fans of the genre may want to seek out. Goregast have the tools to impress, but I can't say that this effort brings anything new to the table for the death metal scene. 3 stars seem fair here.
