The Russian instrumental quartet Mind Portal seems to have jammed every musical influence it has into the eight tracks that make up the 41-minute debut CD, 1/1. The diversity kicks off with a pair of tunes that recall Liquid Tension Experiment ("Roller Coaster" and "Natural Disaster") before transitioning to classic rock, a la Queen (check out Grigory Kurnosov's Brian May-like playing on "Summer Morning"). "Traffic Jam" echoes Joe Satriani at his most playful, "Fast Food" will clog your ear arteries, "Reminiscence" begins with a lovely piano solo from Vyacheslav Bessonov that becomes the album's most cinematic song once the rest of the band joins him, and on closer "Dedication," Mind Portal seems to musically sum up everything that came before it.
This is an impressive debut.
