Infinity: Infinity

MelodicRock Records has unearthed this lost AOR album from the mid-Eighties featuring young vocalist Mitch Malloy and former Rainbow and Billy Joel keyboardist David Rosenthal. Previously unreleased, the self-titled debut (and only) album from Infinity — which also features future Winger, Dokken and Whitesnake guitarist Reb Beach — is a bouncy slice of shimmering, keyboard-driven rock that sounds as dated as you would expect, given its genesis in 1986 and 1987. But it's still fun to hear songs like "Secrets" and "She's On Fire," on which Malloy (who would go on to success as a solo artist with a massive single called "Anything At All" and later audition to replace Sammy Hagar in Van Halen) sings as if he had nothing to lose. Think Toto and Alias.

One song on Infinity, "Liar," was never finished back in the day, but the original backing tapes survived and were salvageable. So Malloy laid down new lead vocals and new drums to make "Liar" a complete track and round out this 41-minute album with nine songs. The overall audio quality is crisp, produced to sound as Infinity would have had it been released by a major label in 1987.

All of that makes this a love-it-or-hate-it release for SoT readers. But it's not everyday that music recorded almost a quarter-century ago by players whose names still mean something sees the light of day. This would have been gigantic back then; today, it's a gem that will please a segment of listeners out there who still wish Kurt Cobain had never been born.
