Kinetik: Stoppage Time

Stoppage Time is the four track debut demo offering from American technical groove metal act Kinetik. The band themselves site the likes of The Buried And Me, Sikth and Meshuggah as influences and to be fair while not yet in the same league as these outfits, Kinetik do conjure up a riff strewn and shouty vocalled racket reminiscent of their heroes.

Guitarist Chris Lee's riffs are big and thick and drummer Andrew Bailey delivers a suitably thunderous backing to Eric Tampier's solid bass work however it is vocalist Robert Anderson who sometimes shines, but also can grate on the nerves a little. Whilst a full on shout is arguably a requirement for this style of metal, Anderson can be just too far on the wrong side of shrill for comfort and after a while his voice can become just too irritating. It is not that he isn't capable and in fact suggesting he's a weak link would be unfair, as for the majority of the four songs presented here he handles things with a fair amount of style. However the ability to know where to rein things in would undoubtedly lead to a more rounded performance.

Whilst far from the finished article, there's much to recommend in Kinetik's short debut and if you like to discover new bands before they hit it big, then Stoppage Time could well be rather rewarding.
